Countries

In 2005 three ASA projects of the German InWEnt GmbH were launched to investigate on the aluminium production in Brazil, Ghana and India. The aim of the projects was to collect data about the variety of environmental and social problems connected with bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminium production on a local level. The research on these topics is of great importance because in recent years the sites of production plants of the aluminium industry have been shifting to so-called Third World countries where environmental and social standards are often very low and as a result of that the impact on the local population severe.

This website connects these three projects in Brazil, Ghana and India and to display the results o the participating teams. It contains factual documentary, topographic material and photographs and is to be updated regularly. The different perspectives on the problems connected with alminum production and the different methods used in investigating the topic is due to the specific conditions found in the host countries as well as to the professional backgrounds of the participants, ranging from social science to photography.

The objective of this website is to contribute to awareness-raising on the effects of the production of aluminium in so-called Developing Countries and in doing so ultimately influence the decision making processes in the aluminium industry towards a environmentally and socially more sustainable way of production. Therefore this website is supposed to strengthen the global monitoring network of the aluminium industry in the future.
